Jago - Chapter 6

I think this concluding chapter is very much like my philosophy for English Education. “In order to learn to write, one must write (and I’d like to add, one must read). Authentic tasks and topics generate the most cohesive students writing. Students need both supportive and critical geedback. There is no cohesive writing without revision (and cohesive instruction).” (pg 118) I fully support the idea that “Teachers should teach.” It is very empowering and slightly overwhelming. However, I should add the following:

“Teachers should teach.”
“Students should be responsible and held accountable for their own learning.”
“Teachers should continue to learn.”

Overall, Jago’s book is a wonderful resource for teachers of writing. It provides concepts and objectives that are found in state and national standards, shows ways of communicating the concepts to students, gives sample lesson plans, and suggests literature for further reference.
