Portfolios are a great tool for students to have a collection of good, polished writing that they can refer back to as their own good model. I remember writing specifically to include in my writing portfolio. There was a combination of hand written and computer generated final drafts. For our school to receive national recognition, we had to hand write essays and submit them to a committee. In the following years, we had a solid collection of these generic, though polished, essays. Portfolios let students see how far their writing has progressed.
They are simple projects that a teacher can guide students to construct. The students can design their portfolio to suit their individual needs (or personalities!). Self evaluations are also really useful to have in the portfolio after the finished product. A reflection will allow the students to feel ownership of their work and review their strengths and weaknesses and their connection to the subject.
