I love Christensen's approach to this social-political issue of immigration. Having the students research the topic not only broadens their awareness of immigration and teaches them how to use outside sources to learn more about a subject and prepare to write about it. Students are bound to have personal stories and opinions regarding immigration and they could benefit from writing about these stories. It really fits with her social justice theme. I especially like her inclusion of Lawson Inada's collection of poems "Legends from Camp."
Immigration is such a broad subject that it may be difficult for younger writers to research. I think that this would be a good opportunity to explore personal stories and research current events that may be similar. For older writers, opinion papers, argumentative essays, and political criticism essays would be perfect for exploring immigration. One thing I wish Christensen would have emphasized more is exploring an individual's relationship to immigration.
I also really like the attention to the planning process for a research paper and the section devoted to keeping a writing portfolio. Portfolio's are important to keep a record of a writer's progress and keeps examples on hand for submission.
